Unique retirement studies from Marketing Sciences!
Marketing Sciences conducts two annual studies in the area of pensions and retirement planning. These are run on a multi-client basis – spreading the cost. However, clients can input into the design – effectively an adhoc study at a fraction of the price!
The longest running is the Retirement Planning Monitor (RPM). RPM is a detailed study of consumer attitudes and behaviour towards long-term saving and retirement provision. It has run since 2001 and addresses many important questions for financial institutions and Government, including:
- What is the effect of the current economic situation on retirement saving?
- Views on ‘default’ funds being UK equity based
- How can consumers be persuaded to make provision for their retirement?
- What do consumers think about savings and investments products?
- What do consumers think of the Government proposals on pensions?
- What provision has been made - or not made - and why?
- How has this changed over time?
RPM runs in December each year.

More recently, Marketing Sciences launched a complementary study, the At-Retirement Monitor (ARM). ARM is a wide-ranging and in-depth study of the financial needs and experiences of British consumers around retirement. It interviews consumers around retirement age (from age 50 to 66). ARM answers some key questions for financial providers:
- What are the key trigger points in thinking about retirement?
- What are consumers’ information needs?
- Who will they trust for advice and products?
- What is their reaction to increasing State Pension Age and the Pensions Crisis?
- What are the barriers and opportunities for selling retirement products (annuities, Equity Release, Long Term Care)?
- When is the best time to target them?
- What are the opportunities for further planning in retirement?
ARM runs in June/July each year.
